Taking care of indoor plants is essential during winter. Houseplants not only enhance decor but also help purify indoor air. However, without proper care, they can wither quickly. Some plants require more attention than others; for example, Peace Lilies thrive in low light, while Money Plants need more sunlight.

Local18 spoke to Hoshiyar Singh, who runs Brij Nursery in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, to understand simple tips for maintaining indoor plants.

Hoshiyar Singh explained that while winter in the mountains is pleasant, extreme cold can be harmful to plants, causing them to wilt and rot. Plants such as Spider Plants, Snake Plants, Peace Lilies, Areca Palms, Orchids, Anthuriums, and Guzmanias add beauty and fragrance to your home but need special care.

Tips For Indoor Plant Care In Winter

    1. Watering: Overwatering can lead to root rot. Water only when the top layer of soil starts drying. Reduce watering in winter and increase it in summer.
    2. Sunlight and Light Exposure: Some indoor plants require more light (Money Plants, Areca Palms), while others need less (Peace Lilies, Snake Plants). Avoid placing plants in direct sunlight, as it may scorch their leaves.
    3. Fertilising: Use organic manure (cow dung, vermicompost) once a month. Household items like banana peels, tea leaves, and eggshells can act as natural fertilisers.
    4. Maintaining Moisture: Indoor plants prefer mild humidity, so mist them occasionally. Keep plants away from air conditioners and heaters to prevent dryness.
    5. Cleaning and Pruning: Dust often accumulates on leaves, hindering respiration. Wipe them with a damp cloth regularly and trim dry or wilted leaves to encourage new growth.
